NOT4IOM and the General Election

With the Isle of Man General Election approaching, Not4IOM will continue to campaign robustly and responsibly on the issues raised by the Mooir Vannin proposal, but we will do so carefully. Manx election law regulates campaign spending and the support and endorsement of candidates, and restricts what organisations other than registered political parties may do to promote or oppose particular candidates, and we intend to observe both the letter and the spirit of those rules.

That means our focus during this period will be on the issues, not on individuals: the project's contested fiscal benefits, its risks to our seascape, fisheries and Biosphere, and the process by which it is being decided.

We will not endorse or oppose any candidate, and nothing we publish should be read as doing so.

What we will do is help improve public understanding of the issues.

We are approaching every candidate on the same terms, and have invited every candidate to meet with Not4IOM, should they wish, as a mutual fact-finding exercise: an opportunity to explore the issues surrounding Mooir Vannin with us, and for us to hear their perspective. These meetings are private, and whether a candidate takes up the invitation is entirely a matter for them. We will not publish or comment on who does or does not meet us. Candidates are of course free to say whatever they wish about any meeting.

We encourage voters to ask candidates their own questions about Mooir Vannin, consider other publicly available information, and make their own independent voting decisions.
